The project concerns the renovation and conversion of a six-storey, 5,000 sq.m. existing building on Ippokratous Street, in the center of Athens, into a university facility for the School of Medicine. Both the design and construction phases were completed within a remarkably short timeframe, highlighting the importance of efficiency, coordination, and precision across all stages of the process.
The architectural approach aimed to create a modern educational environment, fully adapted to the technological and functional demands of contemporary medical studies. The building incorporates KNX automation systems and suspended ceilings concealing ventilation and air-conditioning ducts, designed carefully to maintain comfortable ceiling heights and spatial openness.
A key design intervention was the complete redesign of the façade, which redefines the building’s presence on Ippokratous Street. The use of Xpand perforated metal panels lends a distinct, modern identity to the structure, transforming it into an active part of the urban fabric and offering a fresh visual rhythm to the street.
At the rooftop level, a café and recreation area is planned, featuring greenery and views toward the Acropolis — a space for relaxation, interaction, and community within the academic environment.
This project represents a contemporary transformation of an existing urban structure, merging advanced building technologies, refined material choices, and thoughtful design into a cohesive architectural expression for a modern medical school.
